How to elope in Acadia: Key details to know before you elope in Acadia
Permits are required for larger groups
If you’re planning to have more than 10 people (including you), you’ll need a special use permit from the National Park Service. – More info here! The permit fee is $75. This ensures your celebration is both respectful of the park and compliant with regulations. Smaller elopements with just the two of you or a few guests typically don’t require a permit, but it’s always a good idea to double-check. Sometimes I recommend getting the permit anyway even if you might have less than 10 guests, if your planning for a popular time or day of the week. This ensures that a permit for a larger group was not given out for the same time and location you're hoping for. Permits are given out by designated location for ceremonies. (Locations listed below)
You need two witnesses
Two witnesses will need to sign off on your marriage license. This is obviously pretty easy if you have any loved ones joining you for your day. But, if you want to plan a day where it is just the two of you, this is still a pretty easy task. There are so many people out and about and most of them are so excited to see a couple in wedding attire and more than happy to sign off as a witness. Here is more info on how to get your marriage license in Maine.
Getting your marriage License
You need to file a Maine Intentions of marriage form. If you live in Maine you will need to go to the town you live in to do this. If you are not a Maine resident you can submit this form by mail. – More information here.
You need a national park pass
There are a few visitor areas where you can purchase a visitor pass. You can also purchase one at the main gates of the park. They to accept cards.
Timing is everything
Acadia’s main Park Loop Road is a one-way, which means careful planning is essential to make the most of your day. Knowing the best times to visit key spots—and having someone who understands the park’s flow—can make all the difference. Trust me, you don’t want to miss the light or get stuck in traffic during your big day! This brings me to my next point, planning for off timing will benefit you and your guests. This will also give you more parking and less crowds.
Cadillac mountain Rules
Ahh, one of Acadia’s most iconic spots–Cadillac Mountain. Stunning, but it does come with restrictions. You can’t get married at sunrise or sunset, as these times are reserved for visitors soaking in the views. However, the mountain still offers breathtaking opportunities outside of those hours.
It is a National Park
Okay, I know I'm stating the obvious here but I always like to set clear expectations when planning for certain locations, especially on your wedding day. Acadia is one of the most visited National Parks, with an average of 4 million visits per year. (Rightfully so, it is just so stunning!) This is just something to keep in mind when planning your Acadia elopement. Don't get me wrong, there are certainly quieter areas and times to plan for, but just know there will be people out and about. – This is also why it is important to plan your day with someone who is very familiar with the area.

Surrounded by the iconic Bubbles Mountains, Jordan Pond is a serene spot with pristine water views. The area offers accessible trails and lovely backdrops for photos.
Otter Cliffs + Ocean Path
For dramatic ocean views, Otter Cliffs is hard to beat. The nearby Ocean Path trail is a relatively easy walk, offering plenty of spots to stop and take in the scenery.

How to Elope in Acadia: How to personalize your Acadia Elopement
One of the best parts about eloping in Acadia is the endless possibilities for making your day unique. Here are a few of my favorite activities to incorporate into an elopement:
• Luxury Picnics: Imagine settling down with a gourmet picnic spread after saying your vows. Add champagne and locally sourced goodies, and it’s perfection.
• Plane Tours: See the park from above for a whole new perspective. A plane tour is an exhilarating way to kick off or end your special day.
• Boat Tours or Sunset Cruises: The Maine coast is meant to be experienced on the water. Hop aboard a boat to explore hidden coves and enjoy a sunset you’ll never forget.
• Hiking Adventures: There are so many beautiful hike and trails to explore, plus hiking adds a layer of connection to nature that makes your day extra meaningful.
How to Elope in Acadia: When is the best time of year to Elope in Acadia?
Acadia is a popular destination, especially during peak foliage and summer seasons. I always recommend planning for end of May, early June, and September. These tend to be the least popular times making the park a little more quite. I strongly recommend avoiding a weekend weddings. The weekends here can be a bit chaotic since there are more visitors, bigger crowds, and less parking.
I recommend starting your planning at least 6-12 months in advance to secure permits, accommodations, and any vendors you’ll need. This tends to be a popular destination for couples coming from farther away, so securing things like plane tickets and rental cars if needed is a little easier in this timeframe as well.
Take advantage of local expertise. As someone who spends weeks at a time in Acadia exploring trails, harbors, and vistas, I can help you create a seamless, stress-free elopement day. From crafting the perfect timeline to navigating the Park Loop Road, my goal is to make your experience unforgettable.
